Nominations for the 2013 HHS Green Champion Awards
The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Green Champion Awards were established by the Department in response to Executive Order 13514 issued by President Obama in October 2009 challenging federal agencies to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, energy & water consumption, & pollution.
Sustainability is directly linked to the health of humans, the environment, and economic systems that support and promote our well-being. This triple bottom line - human health, environmental health and economic health - is integral to our mission and the sustainability mandate of Executive Order 13514. The enthusiasm for sustainability is remarkable. All we need to do is establish goals and channel the enthusiasm and the results follow - in the form of more sustainable labs, offices, buildings and processes. With your support, we can once again ensure that these passionate supporters of sustainability are appropriately recognized. The 2013 HHS Green Champions Awards recognize efforts in the following ten categories:
- Good Neighbor
- Change Agents
- Corporate Responsibility (Scope 3 Greenhouse Gas Reduction)
- Electronic Stewardship and Data Centers
- Environmental Stewardship
- Energy/Fleet Management
- Green Hero Video Outreach
- Sustainable Acquisitions
- Sustainable Design and Facilities, and Regional Planning
- Water Use Efficiency and Management
Key selection factors for both individual and team awards include innovation, collaboration, return on investment, and short and long term impact. Nominations will be accepted to recognize individuals, small groups, (6 persons or less) and large groups/organizations for achievements accomplished during Fiscal Year 2013 (October 1, 2012, through September 30, 2013). Contract employees may be recognized in the small group category provided the majority of team members are government employees. Even though nominations may be considered in multiple categories, they should only be submitted in one category.
NEW THIS YEAR!!! An overall individual, small group, and large group/organization winner will be selected for special recognition. Winners will be included in HHS marketing campaigns to promote climate resilience and sustainability efforts.
Nominations are due by February 15, 2014.
Awards are anticipated to be announced on Earth Day 2014, which falls on April 22 this year. To obtain a Green Champions Nomination Form, please email GoGreen@hhs.gov or contact Matthew Hunt.
