Some of the ongoing sustainable strategies implemented at the NIH included protecting and retaining existing landscaping and natural features.

The use of plants that have low water and pesticide needs, and generate minimum plant trimmings is now standard landscaping practice across all NIH campuses. 

The NIH uses no irrigation systems for its campus landscape plantings.​

The NIH Bethesda Campus has extensive public transportation access, both toe buses and Metro

In addition, the NIH has a progress Van & Carpools program as well as actively promoting teleworking.
