General Uses
There are many different quaternary ammonium compounds and they are used in a wide variety of products, primarily cleaners and disinfectants for noncritical surfaces, algicides, urinal blocks, fabric softeners, antistatic agents and wood preservatives.
Reduction Strategies
Avoid use of cleaning products containing these compounds if microbicidal action is unnecessary.  For uses in antimicrobial applications products containing quaternary ammonium compounds and their alternatives must meet applicable EPA registration requirements for the specific use.
Current Procurement Restrictions
None
NIH Disposal Requirements
Dispose of unused products containing these compounds as Chemical Waste; they should not be discharged into wastewater systems.
