Bike To Work Day

Get ready! The annual Bike to Work Day is returning to the NIH this year. The event will take place on Thursday, May 15. As always, there will be a cyclist pit stop on the Bethesda Campus. This year's pit stop will be located in the back of Building 45, from 7 AM to 8:30 AM. If you register, you can get a free T-shirt.

Interested in registering? Click here for the DC Metro Area registration form! The name of the pit stop is: “MD Montgomery Co National Institutes of Health Bldg 1" – but please don't be confused, the station will be located in the back of Building 45 this year.

Riding for the first time can be intimidating, but Bike to Work Metro DC and the NIH Bicycle Commuting Club (BCC) have resources to help. Bike to Work Metro DC has information for First Time Riders,  convoys, and even what to watch out for when biking in the rain. The NIH BCC also has ride mentors who will help with route logistics and accompany riders.

A helpful trail to use while biking to the Bethesda campus is the Bethesda Trolley Trail, which leads from the North Bethesda Metro Station to the southside of the NIH Bethesda Campus. It also has several branches and connecting paths. Additionally, both in and outside of Bethesda, make use of GPS services and local municipality websites to find the smoothest and safest path to take.

Last year, there were 155 cyclists who registered for Bike To Work Day. This resulted in a total of over 900 miles cycled and an estimated emissions reduction of 798 lbs CO2e.

By biking to work, you are engaging in healthy exercise, reducing traffic, easing parking congestion and reducing travel emissions. We sincerely hope you'll give it a try, at least for this one day!

While it may be exciting to see your coworkers every day, traffic and parking might not be so pleasant. In this article, we will review some alternative transportation options supported by the Division of Amenities and Transportation Services (DATS) that can help avoid those pesky parking problems and reduce travel emissions.
