NIHAC is located in Dickerson, Maryland, on a rural site of over 500 acres, 4.5 miles from Poolesville, Maryland. It supports behavioral research and animal holding programs.

The boilers and generators at NIHAC use compressed natural gas and No.2 fuel which produce air emissions.

- New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) promulgated under 40 CFR 60, Subparts A and Dc for Small Industrial-Commercial-Institutional Steam Generating Units
- National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) promulgated under 40 CFR 63, Subparts A and JJJJJJ for Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional Boilers Area Sources
- National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) promulgated under 40 CFR 63, Subpart A and Subpart ZZZZ – National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Stationary Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engines
