The 2024 NIH Green Labs Program Is Now Live!

All NIH staff are encouraged to complete the 2024 NIH Green Labs Program (GLP) self-assessment for their lab! Completing the assessment will provide information on sustainability programs at the NIH and encourage staff to adopt sustainability practices. By participating in the GLP, your lab may receive recognition as a certified NIH Green Lab. There are three tiers: bronze, silver or gold. Even if your lab has participated before, participate again, and see if your lab can reach the next tier.

To participate, all that needs to be done is a single representative from your lab needs to complete a brief self-assessment. The assessment (link below) consists of answering roughly 30 multiple choice questions, depending on your campus. The GLP is a helpful tool, even for a lab just starting to prioritize sustainability, because it contains a plethora of helpful resources. The self-assessment can be completed here:

The 2024 GLP will close on December 15, 2024. Please note that there are slightly different versions depending on your campus. Rocky Mountain Labs, Research Triangle Park and Fort Detrick each have their own versions, while Bethesda and all other locations are covered by another version.

The Green Labs Program has grown steadily over the past few years, up to 247 participating labs in 2023. Among those participants, there was a strong competition to see which ICO could gather the highest total of participating labs. NIEHS emerged victorious with 37 participating labs, with NIDDK (32) and NICHD (27) not far behind! Can you help your ICO take first place this year? Take the GLP for your lab and promote it within your ICO!

Recycling & Waste Diversion Goals

As we enter November, you may be reminded of turkey, pumpkins and cooler weather. But when it comes to sustainability, November means America Recycles Day! In recognition of this holiday, let’s take a little time to think about recycling.

Did you know? Waste diversion can be achieved in many different ways, like recycling the item, returning it to a manufacturer to be reused, converting it into a new product, or even incinerating it and utilized the released heat.
