Make An Impact on America Recycles Day!
America Recycles Day (ARD) is a nationally recognized day for promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. This day usually occurs on November 15, but it is often expanded to last an entire week or longer. The NIH has a long-standing tradition of participating in ARD, usually through holding collections for recyclables that are not collected the rest of the year.
We would like to encourage all NIH staff to take advantage of the NIH activities listed below for America Recycles Day. Take 10 minutes to search through your office or home and identify any items you feel have reached the end of their usefulness. Then, see if there is a program, either year-round or specifically for ARD, that will allow these items to be recycled! Alternatively, you might be able to surplus the unneeded items through your Property Officer to make them available to others! We can each make a difference this America Recycles Day!

- NIEHS Launches Interactive Recycling Guide
- To make recycling easier at NIEHS, we’ve created an Interactive Recycling Guide. This new resource presents recycling information in an easy-to-use, visual format. You can also search using keywords and you can filter by categories.
- It serves as a companion to our current written Recycling Guide, and we’ll be adding more content to the Interactive Recycling Guide moving forward.
- If you see things that need fixing or could be improved in the Interactive Recycling Guide, send an email to NIEHSrecycles@niehs.nih.gov.
Bayview Activities:
- A recycling collection event will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024 on the 2nd floor of the BRC (along the loading dock corridor). Accepted items include keyboards, computer mice, monitors, power strips, small electronics, microwave ovens, refrigerators, typewriters, speakers, software-PCO, wires, cables, furniture, file cabinets, chairs, PC accessories (no data storage equipment) and phone chargers. Did you know? Waste diversion can be achieved in many different ways, like recycling the item, returning it to a manufacturer to be reused, converting it into a new product, or even incinerating it and utilized the released heat. To learn more about waste disposal at the NIH, please visit the NEMS Training webpage to view a short (20 minute) NIH environmental awareness training video.
