June 2026 Take Action

Take Action

Conserving Natural Resources Starts with Everyday Choices

Celebrate June and its many days of environmental observation by getting involved in stewardship initiatives. Environmental conservation depends not only on technology and policy but also on human behavior. Protecting natural resources requires a shift toward sustainable consumption and responsible resource use. Combined community action and grassroots efforts have consistently proven their effectiveness in resource conservation and environmental stewardship.1,2

Be the change you want to see! Here are some ways you can be a part of that combined community action:

1. Reduce Water Waste

Simple measures such as repairing leaks, installing water-efficient fixtures and cutting down on unnecessary water use can go a long way in reducing your home's water consumption. While this may seem out of the norm now, long-term conservation behaviors are most effective when they become routine habits.3

When working in labs, report any leakage to your building facilities manager.

2. Use Energy Wisely

Turn off unused electronics, switch to energy-efficient appliances when feasible and choose alternative transportation options (biking, walking, metro, bus) when possible. Keeping up those energy-saving behaviors can lead to meaningful reductions in energy use and air pollution.3,4

3. Consume Responsibly

Buy only what you need, choose durable products, reduce food waste and support environmentally responsible businesses. By practicing sustainable consumption, you can even improve environmental attitudes and awareness in those around you.1,4

4. Support Biodiversity

Plant native species, create pollinator-friendly spaces, participate in local conservation efforts and avoid products that contribute to habitat destruction. Even residential landscapes can provide valuable habitat for wildlife and contribute to biodiversity conservation.5,6

5. Advocate and Volunteer

Consider engaging with your local neighborhood to encourage others towards environmental stewardship. Environmental stewardship initiatives demonstrate that collective action can protect and restore natural resources at larger scales.6,7
