​​The NIH water management program covers many aspects of water use and discharge. The key goals of the program is to: ensure the quality of drinking water to meet the Safe Drinking Water Act; properly discharge waste water that meets all regulatory requirements; reduce the quantity of stormwater runoff and the pollution that it causes; reduce the amount of water used across all campuses; and protect the quality of local water sources.​

​Drinking Water​ ​Potable water at the NIH is generally provided by external sources and complies with the Safe Drinking Water Act.	Waste Water​​ ​Waste water at the NIH mainly consists of the discharges to the local sanitary sewer. ​
Stormwater​ The Stormwater program manages the impacts of stormwater runoff and seeks to reduce the release of pollutants during storm events.	Water Conservation​​ ​​The Water Conservation program reduces the amount of water used on NIH campuses and protects the quality of water sources. ​
